PREFACE.

THE following Letters are selected for publication from many valuable Manuscripts by the late Rev. Richard Lyne, who was sometime Rector of Little Petherick-S. Petroc Minorin the County of Cornwall. They all bear ample testimony that their Author was eminently а Christian and a Scholar-deeply learned in Theological, Classical, and General Literature.

His Daughter, to whom these Letters are addressed, has been assured by some, who watch "the signs of the times" in which we live, that their publication may prove a valuable means of counteracting certain errors which are prevalent and gaining ground amongst us.

Many years having elapsed since they were written, small portions, here and there, which had reference solely to incidents peculiar to those days, have been omitted..
