2 Lord! to my rescue come!
Thine own this moment seize !
Gather my wandering spirit home,
And keep in perfect peace:
Suffered no more to rove

O'er all the earth abroad,
Arrest the prisoner of Thy love,
And shut me up in God!

268. C. M.

1 I love thee, holy Will of God! And all Thy ways adore, And every day I live I pray

To love Thee more and more.

2 When obstacles and trials seem Like prison-walls to be,

I do the little I can do;

I leave the rest to Thee.

3 I have no cares, O blessed Will!
For all my cares are Thine;
I live in triumph, Lord! for Thou
Hast made Thy triumphs mine.

4 And when it seems no chance or change From grief can set me free,

Hope finds its strength in helplessness, And freely waits on Thee.

5 Man's weakness, waiting upon God,
Its end can never miss,

For men on earth no work can do
More angel-like than this.

269. P. M.

1 "Thy will be done!" In devious way
The hurrying stream of life may run,
Yet still our grateful hearts shall say,
"Thy will be done!"

2 "Thy will be done!" If o'er us shine
A gladdening and a prosperous sun,
This prayer will make it more divine,
Thy will be done !"

3 "Thy will be done!" Though shrouded o'er Our path with gloom, one comfort-one Is ours, to breathe, while we adore,

[blocks in formation]

1 My God, my Father, while I stray
Far from my home on life's rough way,
Oh teach me from my heart to say,
Thy will, my God, Thy will be done!
2 Though dark my path and sad my lot,
Let me be still, and murmur not,
But breathe the prayer divinely taught,
Thy will, my God, Thy will be done!

3 If Thou should'st call me to resign.
What most I prize,-it ne'er was mine,-
I only yield Thee what is Thine,—
Thy will, my God, Thy will be done!
4 Renew my will from day to day,
Blend it with Thine, and take away
All that now makes it hard to say,
Thy will, my God, Thy will be done!

271. L. M.

1 He sendeth sun, He sendeth shower,
Alike they 're needful for the flower:
And joys and tears alike are sent
To give the soul fit nourishment.
As comes to me or cloud or sun,
Father! Thy will, not mine, be done!

2 Can loving children e'er reprove

With murmurs, whom they trust and love?
Creator! I would ever be

A trusting, loving child to Thee:
As comes to me or cloud or sun,
Father! Thy will, not mine, be done!
3 O! ne'er will I at life repine-
Enough that Thou hast made it mine.
When falls the shadow cold of death,
I yet will sing with parting breath,
As comes to me or shade or sun,
Father! Thy will, not mine, be done!

[blocks in formation]

1 "Father! Thy will, not mine, be done!"
So prayed on earth Thy suffering Son;
So, in his name I pray :
The spirit fails, the flesh is weak;
Thy help in agony I seek;

Ŏ take this cup away.

2 If such be not Thy sovereign will,
Thy wider purpose then fulfil;
My wishes I resign,

Into Thine hands my soul commend,
On Thee for life or death depend;
Thy will be done, not mine!

273. S. M.

Where is thy God, my soul?
Is He within thy heart;

Or Ruler of a distant realm
In which thou hast no part?

Where is thy God, my soul?
Only in stars and sun?

Or have the holy words of Truth
His light in every one?

Where is thy God, my soul?
Confined to Scripture's page?
Or does His spirit check and guide
The spirit of each age?

O Ruler of the sky,

Rule Thou within my heart! O great Adorner of the world, Thy light of life impart!

Giver of holy words,

Bestow Thy holy power!

And aid me, whether work or thought

Engage the varying hour!

In Thee have I my help,

As all my fathers had;

I'll trust Thee when I'm sorrowful,
And serve Thee when I'm glad.

274. L. M.

1 This foolish heart can leave her God,
And shadows tempt her thoughts abroad
How shall I fix this wandering mind,
And throw my fetters on the wind?

2 Look gently down, Almighty Grace!
Prison me round in Thine embrace;
Pity the soul that would be Thine,
And let Thy power my love confine.

3 Say, when shall that bright moment be
That I shall live alone for Thee;

My heart no foreign lords adore,

;

And knowing Thee, God! stray no more?
