3 To them remains nor place nor time; 4 While place we seek, or place we shun, 5 Could I be cast where Thou art not, 414. L. M. 1 O God, whose thunder shakes the sky, 2 The mystic mazes of Thy will, 3 O teach me, in the trying hour, When anguish swells the dewy tear, 415. C. M. 10 that I knew where I might find 2 Not with the thunder of Thy power 3 Thine own unutterable grace, 4 Hear, then, the voice of my desire, 5 Lord! Thou hast troubled my repose, Thine hand hath touched my heart-it glows, 6 Stamp Thine own Image on my soul, Lord! Thou hast wounded, make me whole! Hast slain, now raise the dead! 1 If life in sorrow must be spent, 2 No bliss I'll seek, but to fulfil, my Lord is pleased to grant. 3 Our days are numbered;—let us spare Our anxious hearts a needless care: 'T is Thine to number out our days; 'T is ours to give them to Thy praise. 4 Faith is our only business here,— Faith simple, constant, and sincere; Oh, blessed days Thy servants see, Thus spent, O Lord, in pleasing Thee! 417. P. M. 1 I thank Thee, O my God, who made So full of splendour and of joy, So many glorious things are here, 2 I thank Thee, too, that Thou hast made Joy to abound; So many gentle thoughts and deeds That in the darkest spot of Earth 3 I thank Thee more that all our joy That shadows fall on brightest hours; So that Earth's bliss may be our guide, 4 For Thou, who knowest, Lord, how soon Our weak heart clings, Hast given us joys, tender and true, So that we see, gleaming on high, 5 I thank Thee, Lord, that Thou hast kept The best in store; We have enough, yet not too much A yearning for a deeper peace, Not known before. 6 I thank Thee, Lord, that here our souls, Though amply blest, Can never find, although they seek, Nor ever shall, until they lean On Jesus' breast! 1 We ask for Peace, O Lord! 2 3 It is not for such Peace that we would pray. We ask for Peace, O Lord! Yet not to stand secure, Girt round with iron Pride, Contented to endure: Crushing the gentle strings, Or others' woe; Thou, O dear Lord, wilt never teach us so. We ask Thy Peace, O Lord! Through storm, and fear, and strife, To light and guide us on, Through a long struggling life: While no success or gain Shall cheer the desperate fight, Our wasted might; Yet pressing through the darkness to the light. -29 |
