dress also. "We cannot be too careful in handling coals," said Eulalia, in vexation. "Yes, truly," said the father. "You see, my child, the coals, even if they do not burn, blacken; so it is with the company of the vicious."

257. Presumption is Punished, (verses 2, 3, 6-14, 28-33.)—A noble ship was bearing into port. It was the evening hour, and too late to enter without a pilot. There were two passages into the harbour; one a dangerous, narrow channel, the other a wide and safer one. The captain determined to pilot himself by the narrow passage. A storm was coming up, and the passengers, with fear and consternation, begged him to take the wider channel. He laughed at their cowardice, and swore that he would do as he pleased. As the night advanced the gale increased. Soon arose a cry, Breakers ahead, breakers ahead!" The captain flew to the wheel; the sails were struck; the wind had the mastery, and the captain found a will that could defy his own. The vessel made a fearful plunge, struck the foreship deep into the sand, to be shattered by the wild waves' pleasure. Few survived the terrors of that fearful night; and among the dead thrown up by the rising tide was the body of the wilful and presumptuous captain.

LESSON 143.-THE BRAZEN SERPENT.-Numbers xxi. 1-9.

258. We Should Look on the Bright Side of Things, (verses 4-6.)—"I think the rain was very provoking!" said Bessie Jones, looking out of the window with an angry frown upon her brow. "It always rains when I don't want it. It is spoiling the slides; and there won't be an inch of ice left in an hour to skate on. Now, where's my fun this afternoon, I should like to know ?"-"You can stay at home and sew," said her aunt. "I want to skate," said Bessie. "This rain is very provoking." "The provoking is all in your own heart, Bessie," said her brother. "If you only had blue sky inside, you would not mind the rain outside."

259. "There is Life for a Look at the Crucified One," (verses 8, 9.)-An American gentleman was fording the Susquehannah river on horseback, and found himself becoming so dizzy as to be in danger of losing his seat. Suddenly he received a blow on the chin from a hunter, who was his companion, with the words, "Look up!" He did so, and recovered his balance. It is so with the sinner. If he looks to the dark waters of his sins surging round him, he will begin to despair. He must look upward to Christ, who has been "lifted up" to give salvation.

LESSON 144.-BALAAM.-Numbers xxii. 1-35.

260. We Must Choose between God and the World, (verses 5-12.)-The_Rev. A. Judson, missionary in Burmah, relates the following incident:-"A Karen woman offered herself for baptism. After the usual examination I inquired whether she could give up her ornaments for Christ. It was an unexpected blow. I explained the spirit of the Gospel, and appealed to her own consciousness of vanity. I then read to her the Apostle's prohibition, 1 Timothy ii. 9. She looked again and again at her handsome necklace, and then, with an air of modest decision, took it off, saying, "I love Christ more than this."

261. We Must Resist Temptation, (verses 15-35.)—A countryman who had been effectually called by divine grace by means of a sermon on the words, "Is not this a brand plucked out of the fire ?" was some time afterwards solicited by an old companion to accompany him to the ale-house; but the good man strongly resisted every persuasion, saying, "I am a brand plucked out of the fire.' His old companion not understanding this, he explained it to him thus: "Look ye," said he, "there is a great difference between a brand and a green stick. If a spark flies upon a brand that has been partially burnt, it will soon catch fire again; but it is not so with a green stick. I tell you I am that brand plucked out of the fire, and I dare not venture into the way of temptation for fear of being set on fire again."
