WHAT THE FLOWER TAUGHT THE PRISONER.

A poor prisoner, from his little grated window, could just see a creeper that was growing up in the prison-yard, and trying to get into the sun. Every day and hour he watched it; and when it got up high, it seemed to rejoice and look over the wall, green and thriving. The tenant of the dungeon felt that the creeping-flower knew him, and answered back his love, and smiled upon him. It was the only thing in all the world that seemed to care for him. But one day a rude or a wicked hand destroyed it. Oh, then he felt that the last and only friend he had in the world was gone, and he sat down and wept like a child.-PAGE 229.
