SOUTHERN HOSPITAL FOR INSANE. W. A. STOKER, SUPERINTENDENT. This institution, called "Woodmere," is located three miles from the city of Evansville. It has for its district the counties of Sullivan, Greene, Knox, Daviess, Martin, Pike, Gibson, Dubois, Orange, Crawford, Perry, Spencer, Warrick, Vanderburgh, Posey and Harrison. The plan upon which this institution is constructed is what is termed the radiate plan. PROPERTY. The value of the property of this institution is as follows: This institution is heated by indirect steam system and ventilated by the forced fan system. It is lighted by electricity and supplied with water from driven wells. The capacity of this institution is 664 patients. FINANCIAL STATEMENT. For the years ending October 31, 1899, and October 31, 1900: The General Assembly of 1897 made an emergent appropriation of $5,000 to care for thirty additional patients for the year ending October 31, 1899, but as only twenty-eight patients were cared for only $4,666.67 was expended. † One hundred and seventy dollars per capita per annum was appropriated for each persen actually present over a daily average of four hundred and ninety-one patients, amounting to $9,315.98. This institution is asking for the coming two years for Maintenance, annually For each patient cared for in excess of 500, the sum of $170 per capita per year. Repairs, annually SPECIFIC APPROPRIATIONS. $87,500 00 5,000 00 The following appropriations are hereby recommended for this institution: Maintenance And $160 per annum per capita for each patient in excess of $89,000 00 4,000 00 3,000 00 200 00 800 00 Total specific appropriations... $9,000 00 Since this institution has a capacity of 664 inmates and there was a daily average number present during the last year of only 546, the committee does not feel warranted in making a recommendation for the increase of the capacity of the institution. It does not feel that the investment of $20,000 in a farm for dairy purposes would be wise, or that the expenditure of $14,000 for a new laundry is demanded by the conditions of the institution. Instead of the vegetable cellar the committee would recommend a cold storage plant similar to that constructed in the Eastern Hospital for Insane. The committee believes that the water supply is sufficient for present purposes and that the fire protection is adequate, and would therefore not recommend an appropriation for waterworks or for water purifier. |
