SI Terra e pistis constaret inhospita pomis,
Si folia in silvis panisque et caseus essent-
BUCCINA nulla dedit, nec tristem nænia vocem,
Undique constabant horrenda silentia noctis,
Hasta sepulcralem dura cavabat humum.
Tam brevibus super exsequiis non multa precamur,
Et gladiis vilem dum sic exsculpsimus arcam,
Lightly they'll talk of the spirit that's gone,
But half of our dreary task was done,
When the clock told the hour of retiring; And we heard the distant and random gun, That the foe was sullenly firing.
Slowly and sadly we laid him down
From the field of his fame fresh and gory; We carved not a line, we raised not a stone, But we left him alone in his glory.
HEY MY CHICKEN.
HEY my chicken, my chicken,
And hey my chicken, my deary!
Such a sweet pet as this
Was neither far nor neary.
Here we go up up up,
And here we go down down downy,
Compositi tantos leviter censebit honores
Quilibet, atque ipsum per gelida ossa virum; Nil illi curæ, placida modo dormiat herba, Britones extremo quam posuere solo.
Nec media invisi pars est exacta laboris,
Vulneribusque novis et honesto sanguine fusum,
O MEA PULLULA.
O mea pullula suavis,
Hic en! ascendimus cœlos,
Hic rursum et prorsum cursamur,
MARY, I believed thee true,
And I was blest in thus believing; But now I mourn that e'er I knew
A girl so fair and so deceiving. Few have ever loved like me-
Yes, I have loved thee too sincerely! And few have e'er deceived like thee : Alas, deceived me too severely!
Fare thee well!-yet think awhile
On one whose bosom bleeds to doubt thee; Who now would rather trust that smile,
And die with thee, than live without thee. Fare thee well!-I'll think of thee:
Thou leav'st me many a bitter token; For see, distracting woman, see
My peace is gone, my heart is broken!
DELIA, credideram tu saltem fida fuisses;
Et spe quam dederas tu mihi lætus eram :
Non face plebeia, solitis non ignibus uror:
Delia falsa, vale!-sed adhuc reminiscere nostri;
Tecum, quam sine te vivere, posse mori.
