"lech's Servants had violently taken away," Ver. 25. As alfo Gen. xxvi. "For all the Wells which his Father's Servants had digged in the Days of "Abraham his Father, the Philiftines had stopped them, and filled them with "Earth. And Ifaac digged again the Wells of Water, which they had digged "in the Days of Abraham his Father; for the Philiftines had stopped them "after the Death of Abraham. And Ifaac's Servants digged in the Valley, "and found there a Well of Springing Water. And the Herdmen of Gerar did "ftrive with Ifaac's Herdmen, faying the Water is ours; and he called the "Name of the Well Efeck, because they ftrove with him. And they digged "another Well, and ftrove for that alfo; and he called the Name of it Sitnah. "And he digged another Well, and for that they ftrove not. And it came to pass the fame Day, that Ifaac's Servants came and told him concerning the "Well which they had digged, and faid unto him, we have found Water," Ver. 15, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 25, 32. There by Wells nothing is fignified but Doctrinals, about which they ftrove, and about which they did not strive; otherwife their digging Wells, and striving about them fo often, would not have been of that Moment as to be mentioned in the Divine Word. Well fignifies in like Manner the Word or Doctrine, of which in Mofes, "From thence they went to Beer; that is the Well whereof Jehovah fpake unto Mofes, "Gather the People together, and I will give them Water. Then Ifrael fang "this Song: Spring up, O Well, fing ye unto it. The Princes digged the "Well, the Nobles of the People digged it, by the Direction of the Lawgiver, "with their Staves," Numb. xxi. 16, 17, 18. As Well fignified thefe Things, fo did this prophetical Song of Ifrael, in which the Doctrine of Faith is handled, as appears in every Word in the Internal Senfe; hence is the Name Beer, and hence the Name Beersheba, and its Signification in the internal Senfe, which is Doctrine. But Doctrine in which there are not Truths, is called a Pit or a Well in which there is no Water; as in Jeremiah, "Their Nobles have "fent their little ones to the Waters, they came to the Pits, and found no "Water, they returned with their Veffels empty," xiv. 3. where Waters are put for Truths, Pits where they found no Water, for Doctrine, in. which there was no Truth. In the fame, In the fame, "My People have committed two Evils; "they have forfaken me the Fountain of living Waters, and hewn them out "Cifterns, broken Cifterns that can hold no Water," ii. 13. where in like Manner Cisterns are put for Doctrines not true, broken Cifterns for ftoln Doctrines. That Fountain is the Word, alfo Doctrine, and from thence Truth, we find in Isaiah, "When the Poor and Needy feek Water and there is none, "and their Tongue faileth for Thirft, I Jehovah will hear them, I the God "of Ifrael will not forfake them. I will open Rivers in high Places, and "Fountains in the Midft of the Valleys; I will make the Wilder"nefs a Pool of Waters, and the dry Land Springs of Water." xli. 17, 18. where the Prophet fpeaks of the Defolation of Truth, which is fignified by that, the Poor and Needy fhould feek Water, and there fhould be none, and by that, their Tongue fhould fail for Thirft; then he treats of Confolation,

Recreation, and Inftruction after Defolation, as in thefe Verfes concerning Hagar, by that Jehovah will open Rivers in the high Places, and Fountains in the Midft of the Valleys, that he will make the Wilderness a Pool of Waters, and the dry Land Springs of Waters, all which are the Doctrinals of Truth, and of Affection from thence. In Mofes, In Mofes, "Ifrael fhall then dwell in Safety alone; the Fountain of Jacob fhall be upon a Land of Corn and Wine, alfo his Heavens fhall drop down Dew, "Deut. xxxiii. 28. The Fountain of Jacob is put for the Word, and the Doctrine of Faith from thence. As the Fountain of Jacob fignified the Word, and the Doctrine of Faith from thence, therefore when the Lord came to Jacob's Well, he talked with the Woman of Samaria, and taught what is fignified by Fountains and by Water; of which thus in John, "Jefus cometh to a City of Samaria, which is called "Sychar. Now Jacob's Well was there. Jefus therefore being wearied with "his Journey, fat thus on the Well. There cometh a Woman of Sama"ria to draw Water. Jefus faith unto her, Give me to drink. Jefus answered "and faid unto her, if thou kneweft the Gift of God, and who it is that "faith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he "would have given thee living Water. Jefus anfwered and faid unto her, "whofoever drinketh of this Water fhall thirft again; but whoever drink"eth of the Water which I fhall give him, fhall be in him a Well of Water fpringing up into everlasting Life,” iv. 5, 6, 7, 10, 13, 14. As Jacob's Well fignified the Word, Water Truth, and Samaria the Church spiritual, as frequently in the Word, therefore the Lord talked with the Woman of Samaria, and taught that the Doctrine of Truth is from Himself, and that as it is from Himfelf, or which is the fame Thing, from his Word, He is the Fountain of Water fpringing up into eternal Life, and that Truth itself is the Living Water. In like Manner in the fame, "Jefus faid, if any Man thirst, let him come unto me and drink. He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath faid, out of his Belly fhall flow Rivers of living Water," vii. 37, 38. And in the fame, "The Lamb which is in the Midst of the "Throne, fhall feed them, and fhall lead them unto living Fountains of "Waters; and God fhall wipe away all Tears from their Eyes," Rev. vii. 17. In the fame; "I will give unto him that is a-thirst of the Fountain of the Water of Life freely," Rev. xxi. 6. Rivers of living Water, and living Fountains of Water, are put for the Truths which are from the Lord, or from his Word, for the Lord is the Word; the Good of Love and Charity which is only from the Lord, is the Life of Truth; he is faid to be a-thirst who is in the Love and Affection of Truth, none other can thirst. These Truths are also called Fountains of Salvation in Isaiah, "Therefore with Joy fhall ye draw "Water out of the Wells of Salvation. And in that Day fhall ye fay, Praise "the Lord, call upon his Name, declare his Doings among the People, make mention that his Name is exalted,” xii. 3, 4. That Fountain is the Word or Doctrine from thence, is plain alfo in Joel, "And it fhall come to pass in "that Day, that the Mountains fhall drop down new Wine, and the Hills

"fhall flow with Milk, and all the Rivers of Judah fhall flow with Waters, and "a Fountain fhall come forth of the Houfe of Jehovah, and fhall water the "Valley of Shittim," iii. 18. where Waters are put for Truths, Fountain from the Houfe of Jehovah for the Word of the Lord. In Jeremiah, " Be"hold, I will bring them from the North Country, and gather them from "the Coafts of the Earth, and with them the Blind and the Lame. They fhall "come with Weeping, and with Supplications will I lead them; I will caufe "them to walk by the Rivers of Waters in a ftrait Way wherein they shall not "ftumble," xxxi. 8, 9. Fountains of Waters in a ftrait Way manifeftly stand for the Doctrinals of Truth, the North Country for Ignorance or the Defolation of Truth, Weeping and Supplications for their State of Grief and Defperation; to be brought to the Fountains of Waters, for Recreation and InItruction in Truths; as here may be obferv'd of Hagar and her Son. Concerning the fame Things Ifaiah likewife thus treats, "The Wilderness and the folitary Place shall be glad for them; and the Defart shall rejoice and blossom "as the Rofe. It fhall bloffom abundantly, and rejoice even with Joy and "finging; the Glory of Lebanon fhall be given unto it, the Excellencies of "Carmel and Sharon; they fhall fee the Glory of Jehovah and the Excellency "of our God. Strengthen ye the weak Hands, and confirm the feeble Knees. "Then the Eyes of the Blind shall be opened, and the Ears of the Deaf "fhall be unstopped; for in the Wilderness fhall Waters break out, and "Streams in the Defart; and the parched Ground fhall become a Pool, and the "thirsty Land Springs of Water," xxxv. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7. Where Wilderness is put for the Defolation of Truth, Waters, Rivers, Lakes, Springs of Waters for Truths, which are for Recreation and Joy to those who were in Vastation, whofe Joys are described in many Places. In David, "Jehovah fendeth the "Springs into the Valleys, which run among the Hills. They give Drink to every Beaft of the Field; the Wild Affes quench their Thirst. He watereth "the Hills from his Chambers, Pf. civ. 10, 11, 13. Springs are put for Truths, Hills for the Love of Good and Truth; to give Drink to, for to instruct; the Beast of the Field, for those who live according thereto, as may be seen N. 774. 841. 908; Wild Affes for those who are only in Truth Rational, N. 1949. 1950. 1951. In Mofes," Jofeph is a fruitful Bough, even a fruitful "Bough by a Well," Gen. xlix. 22. Well is put for Doctrine from the Lord. In the fame; Jehovah thy God bringeth thee into a good Land, a "Land of Brooks of Water, of Fountains, and Depths that spring out of Valleys and Hills," Deut. viii. 7. Land stands for the Kingdom of the Lord and the Church, N. 662. 1066. 1067. 1262. 1413.2571, which good Things it is faid fpring from the Good of Love and Charity; Rivers, Waters, Fountains and Depths are put for Truths from thence. In the fame; "The Land whither thou goeft to poffefs it, is a Land of Hills and Valleys, and drinketh Water of the Rain of Heaven," Deut. xi. 11. That Waters are Truths as well fpiritual as rational, as like wife Scientifics, appears from these Places; In Ifaiah, "Behold, Jehovah the Lord of Hofts doth take away from Jerufa- .

In the fame, "He that walketh "righteously, and fpeaketh uprightly, he fhall dwell on high, Bread fhall "be given him, his Waters fhall be fure," xxxiii. 15, 16. In the fame, "And they thirfted not when he had led them thro' the Defart; he caused "the Waters to flow out of the Rock for them; he cleaved the Rock also, " and the Waters gushed out," xlviii. 21. Exod xvii. 1 to 8. Numb. xxiii. 13. In David, "He clave the Rocks in the Wilderness, and gave them Drink as "out of the great Depths. He brought the Streams alfo out of the Rock, "and caused the Waters to run down like Rivers," Pf. lxxviii. 15, 16. where Rock ftands for the Lord, Waters, Rivers, and Depths from thence for Truths from Him. In the fame, " "Jehovah turneth Rivers into a Wilder"ness, and Water-Springs into dry Ground. He turneth the Wilderness into "a ftanding Water, and dry Ground into Water-fprings," Pf. cvii. 33, 35. In the fame," The Voice of Jehovah is upon the Waters; Jehovah is upon many Waters," Pf. xxix. 3. In the fame, "There is a River, the Streams "whereof shall make glad the City of our God; the holy Place of the Taber"nacles of the most High," xlvi. 4. In the fame," By the Word of the "Lord were the Heavens made; and all the Hoft of them by the Breath of "his Mouth. He gathereth the Waters of the Sea together as an Heap; he "layeth up the Depth in Store-houses," xxxiii. 6, 7. In the fame, Thou visitest the Earth and watereft it; thou greatly enrichest it with the River of God which is full of Water. Pf. lxv. 9. In the fame, "The Waters faw thee, O God, the Waters faw thee; they were afraid; the Depths also were "troubled; the Clouds poured out Water, thy Way is in the Sea, and thy "Path in great Waters," Pf. lxxvii. 16, 17, 19. Here that Waters do not fignify Waters, nor that the Depths were moved, and that the Way of Jeho vah is in the Sea, and his Path in Waters, is plain to every one, but that the Waters are Spirituals, that is, the Spirituals which are of Truth; otherwise it would be a Heap of empty Words. In Ifaiah, "Ho every one that thirsteth, come ye to the Waters, and he that hath no Money, come, buy," lv. 1. In Zechariah, "And it shall be in that Day, that Living Waters fhall go out "of Jerufalem; half of them toward the former Sea, and half of them to"ward the hinder Sea," xiv. 8. Moreover where the Word treats of a Church to be planted and planted, and that is defcribed by a Paradise, Garden, Grove, or by Trees, it is ufual for it to be defcribed likewife by Waters or Rivers which water, by which are fignified Spirituals, Rationals or Scientifics, which are of Truths, as Paradife, Gen. ii. 8, 9. which is alfo defcribed by Rivers there, Ver. 10 to 14, by which are fignified thofe Things which are of Wisdom and Understanding, as may be feen N. 107 to 121; in like Manner alfo frequently elsewhere in the Word; as in Mofes, "As "the Valleys are they spread forth, as Gardens by the River Side, as the

"Trees of Lign Aloes which Jehovah hath planted, and as Cedar Trees befide the "Waters, He fhall pour the Water out of his Buckets, and his Seed fhall be "in many Waters," Numb. xxiv. 6, 7. In Ezekiel, "He took alfo of the "Seed of the Land, and planted it in a fruitful Field, he placed it by great "Waters, and it became a spreading Vine," xvii. 5, 6. That Vine and Vineyard fignifies the Church fpiritual, may be feen N. 1069. In the fame, Thy Mother is like a Vine in thy Blood, planted by the Waters, she was "fruitful and full of Branches by many Waters," xix. 10. In the fame; "Behold, the Affyrian was a Cedar in Lebanon; the Waters made him to grow, "the Deep fet him up on high with her Rivers running about his Plants, and "fent out her little Rivers unto all the Trees of the Field," xxxi. 3, 4. In the fame, "Behold, at the Bank of the River were very many Trees on the "one Side and on the other. Then faid he unto me, Thefe Waters iffue out "towards the Eaft Country, and go down into the Defart, and go into the "Sea; which being brought forth into the Sea, the Waters shall be healed. "And every Thing that liveth, which moveth, whitherfoever the Rivers "fhall come, fhall live; and there fhall be a very great Multitude of Fish, "because these Waters fhall come thither; for they fhall be healed; and every Thing fhall live whither the River cometh. But the miry Places thereof, " and the Marishes thereof, shall not be healed, they shall be given to Salt,” xlvii. 7, 8, 9, 11. Where the Prophet speaks of the New Jerufalem, or the spiritual Kingdom of the Lord; the Waters iffuing out to the Eaft Country fignify Spirituals which are from Celestials, which are Truths from a celestial Original, that is, Faith from Love and Charity, N. 101. 1250; to go down into the Defart fignifies Doctrinals which are of the Rational, N. 2418. 2450; to go into the Sea fignifies Scientifics, the Sea is the Collection of them, N. 28; every Thing that liveth, which moveth, are their Delights, N. 746. 909. 994. which liveth of the Waters of the River, that is, of Spirituals from a celeftial Original; a Multitude of Fish fignifies the Abundance of applicable Scientifics, N. 40. 991; miry Places and Marshes ftand for Inapplicables and Impurities; to be given for Salt, to be defolated, N. 2455. In Jeremiah, "Blessed is the "Man that trufteth in Jehovah; he fhall be as a Tree planted by the Waters, and that spreadeth out her Roots by the River," xvii. 7, 8. In David, "He fhall be like a Tree planted by the Rivers of Water, that bringeth forth "his Fruit in his Seafon," Pf. i. 3. In John, "He fhewed me a pure River of Water of Life, clear as Crystal, proceeding out of the Throne of God, and of the Lamb. In the Midft of the Street of it, and of either Side of the River, was there the Tree of Life, which bare twelve Manner of Fruits," Rev. xxii. 1, 2. Since then Waters fignify Truths in the internal Senfe, therefore in the Jewish Church, for the Sake of Representation before Angels, in whom Rituals are regarded spiritually, it was commanded that the Priests and Levites fhould wash themselves with Water, when they approached to adminifter, and indeed from the Laver between the Tabernacle of the Altar, and afterwards out of the Brazen Sea, and other Lavers about the Temple, which
