CHAPTER I.

Extending from the period of her birth to her removal to Ameri ca; and embracing an account of her conversion to God, and of trials consequent thereon.

I was born at the foot of Blackheath, in the year one thousand seven hundred and sixty-six. My father I can say but little about; but my mother was a prudent, industrious, godly woman; and brought up her children with the most prudent and tender care. Her trials were extraordinary, both in providence and grace; being left by my father to provide for her family by the labor of her hands. She was a member of George Whitfield's tabernacle, before I had any recollection; and a woman, whose remarkable trials made her singular, both for faith and patience; so that by the ordering of Providence, I had the advantage of a tender mother's godly conversation; by which impressions were made on my mind, that were never entirely erased.
