ARTICLE I.-PRELIMINARY STATEMENT. Explanatory Letter from Dr. J. W. Nevin.—Apology to the Alumni.— Character of the Work.-Contributors.

It was announced in the Prospectus of this publication, that its editorial conduct would be in my hands. As it now appears under a somewhat different form, the case may be felt to call for a brief explanation.

So far as any engagement is concerned, I have considered myself exonerated in full, by the simple fact, that the general condition on which it was assumed, has not been fulfilled. My consent to edit the Review, was given with much hesitation, in the confidence that a certain number of subscribers would be secured and returned, according to determination, before it should be commenced. The very spirited movement made at the start seemed to carry in itself a guaranty, that what was proposed in this way would be accomplished without any difficulty. But there has been a disappointment. The time proposed for returns came and passed, without any such amount of available patronage being secured, as had been made the basis of calculation for the important experiment in the beginning.
