among them.

them. But Jesus found him, in his new trouble. He asked him, “Dost thou believe on the Son of God ?" Now the poor man did not know that Jesus was the Son of God; but as soon as Jesus told Him who He was, he cried out, “Lord, I believe,” and worshipped Him. How happy must he have been now! Not only had he the sight of his bodily eyes, but his soul had been filled with light, for he had learnt to know Jesus. Jesus calls Himself “the Light of the world.” (John viii. 12.)

. ( We are all born blind, dear children ! You know, I do not mean that we cannot see with our eyes; but that our hearts are blind, so that we cannot see the things of God. It is only the light of the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ, shining into our hearts, that can cure this blindness. (2 Cor. iv. 4.) Beg of God, then, that He will shine into your hearts--then

you

will be turned from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God.

CHAPTER XX.

JESUS BLESSING LITTLE CHILDREN.

AND now I am sure you will like to know what Jesus did when some little children were brought to Him. Some good mothers longed that their dear children should be touched and blessed by the Saviour. The disciples thought that it was of no use to trouble Jesus about such little creatures, so they tried to send them away. But did Jesus think they were too young to be noticed by Him? Oh, no! He was much displeased with the disciples. Then calling the little ones to Him, He said, “ Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God.”

" And He took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them,

and blessed them !” Does not this remind you

of

your little hymn ?

“ I think when I read that sweet story of old,

When Jesus dwelt here among men,
And called little children as lambs to his fold,

I should like to have been with them then.

“I wish that his hands had been put on my head,

And that I had been placed on his knee, And that I might have seen his kind look when He

said, "Let the little ones come unto me.'

Ah! dear children, I do not wonder at your wishing this! But do you not know that your parents, too, have taken you to Jesus ? If they love Him themselves, I am sure they gave you to Him as soon as you were born. But that is not what I mean. Did you never see a little baby baptized? Well! when you were a little infant, your dear parents took you to God's house, there to be publicly received into “ the congregation of Christ's flock.” His minister took you in his arms, and prayed earnestly that Jesus would receive and bless you, as He did those little children of old. He then sprinkled water on your face, saying, “I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”

You will see (Matt. xxviii. 19,) that before Jesus went up to heaven, He commanded that all nations should be baptized “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” So you see we were only doing as Jesus commanded, when we took you to Him in baptism. After this the minister made the sign of a cross on your foreheads, “in token that hereafter you shall

“ not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified, and manfully to fight under his banner against sin, the world, and the devil, and to continue Christ's faithful soldiers and servants unto your life's end.” You could not promise these things yourselves, for you could not speak, or understand anything that was done ; so your parents had asked three good people, who loved Jesus themselves, to

come and promise for you. They, you know, were called God-fathers and God-mothers. But now remember, they only promised for you, because you were too young to do it for yourselves. Each one of you must feel that as soon as ever you are old enough to understand, you must earnestly seek God's grace, that you may fulfil what they promised and vowed for you. And this is the way in which you must come to Jesus

yourselves ; as the hymn goes on :“ Yet still to my Saviour in prayer I may go,

And ask for a share in his love !” I have kept you rather long about this, because I am very anxious you should understand how you too, dear children, have been brought to Jesus.
