The Board of Education of Cincinnati presents its report for the school year ending June 30, 1873. It includes a fair synopsis of the financial matters and of the general workings of our Public Schools, including the two High Schools. The treasury, on the first day of the school year, showed a balance of only $6,574.68 in cash and a note of $14,000. This was, certainly, not a very cheering prospect when the expenditures for the previous year had reached the sum of $746,027.03. Added to this the Board had before them the knowledge that the City Council had cut down the rate of levy thought, by the preceding Board, necessary to be levied for the expenditures of this year, one-half mill, being a reduction, as shown by the tax duplicate, of about $90,000, and that the former Board had proceeded on the mistaken idea that the City Council had legally authorized the issuing of bonds to the amount of $100,000 for school purposes. The following tables, prepared by the Clerk, give a correct statement of receipts for the school year and of the expenditures for the school years ending June 30, 1872, and June 30, 1873, the two years being given for the purposes of comparison: RECEIPTS.
