The following table shows the per cent. of pupils enrolled in the schools at the different ages: At 6 years of age 17.6 per cent. of whole number enrolled. At 15 years of age 2.4 per cent. of whole number enrolled. It will be seen from the above that just seventy-five per cent. of all the pupils were, on entering school, under twelve years of age, and that less than nine per cent. were above fourteen years. The following exhibit shows what per cent. the number of pupils enrolled in the several grades of the District and Intermediate Schools was of the whole number enrolled in those schools for each of the school years 1871-72 and 1872-73: The number of pupils enrolled in the Normal and High Schools was 3.5 per cent. of the number enrolled in all the schools. The year before it was 3.2 per cent. The number of pupils enrolled in comparison with the previous year It will be seen from the last three tables that while the increase in the enrollment of pupils was very small, there was a flattering increase in the number in daily attendance, denoting a healthy condition of the schools. The average number of teachers in all the day schools, including special teachers, was 513, being an increase of three over the previous year. The number of reported cases of tardiness in the schools was 55,132, 8,640 less than the number for the year 1871-72. COST OF TUITION. The whole sum paid for tuition in the day schools (exclusive of $800 paid for instruction in the Normal Institute, and $1,614.93 paid for the tuition of city pupils in schools outside the corporation) was $408,898.74. The sum paid for tuition in the night schools was $11,326.62. Total, $420,225.36. The decrease in the amount paid teachers in the day schools, compared with the year 1871-72, was $1,356.61; but in the night schools there was an increased expenditure of $1,868.79, giving a total increase for tuition of $512.18. Below is shown the cost of tuition per pupil for the last five estimated on the number enrolled: years, The amount paid for special instruction in music, drawing, penmanship, and gymnastics was $21,150 25, or a little less than one-nineteenth of the cost of instruction in all the branches. It will be seen that the increased cost per pupil in the District Schools over the cost of 1871-72 was 14 cents. There was, however, a decrease in cost per pupil in the Intermediate Schools of 85 cents, in the High Schools of 55 cents, and in all the schools of 62 cents. |
