Of the essays in this volume which have already appeared in print Emerson and Jonathan Edwards were published originally in The Cambridge History of American Literature; Charles Eliot Norton in the Nation; Evolution and the Other World in the Harvard Theological Review; Henry Adams, Samuel Butler of Erewhon, Viscount Morley, Economic Ideals, and Oxford, Women, and God in the Unpopular (now the Unpartizan) Review. Some of these essays have been considerably altered and enlarged for the present publication. The Spirit and Poetry of Early New England was delivered at the Johns Hopkins University as one of the Turnbull lectures.
