fires that way, but we find it more convenient to put the phosphorus on the end of a stick and mix it with something to keep it from lighting too easily. Then all we have to do is to rub the phosphorus point against anything rough, the friction heats it, it takes fire, and our light is ready. Did you ever hear of the traveller who was stopped by some barbarous people who knew nothing of matches? They would not let him go through their country, and while they were debating whether to kill him or send him back, he grew tired of waiting, and thought he

would take a smoke. So he filled his pipe, and taking a match from his pocket struck it against his boot, lighted his pipe, and thought no more about it. To his surprise, the people who were watching him suddenly ran off, and directly there was a great commotion in the village. After a while the chief men came back very humbly, bringing him loads of presents, and begged him to go his way in peace. They had seen him draw fire from his foot, as they thought, and were afraid that such a great conjuror might burn them all up if they offended him!"

A LITTLE GIRL'S
ANSWER.

HE King of Prussia, while visiting a village in his land, was welcomed by the school children of the place. After their speaker had made a speech for them, he thanked them. Then taking an orange from a plate, he asked, To what kingdom does this belong?"

66

"The vegetable kingdom, sire," said a little girl.

The king took a gold coin from his pocket, and holding it up, asked, "And to what kingdom does this belong?"

"To the mineral kingdom," said the little girl.

"And to what kingdom do I belong, then?" asked the king.

The little girl coloured deeply, for she did not like to say "The animal kingdom," as he thought she would, lest his Majesty should be offended. Just then it flashed into her mind that "God made man in His own image," and looking up with a brightening eye, she said, "To God's kingdom, sire."”

The king was deeply moved. A tear stood in his eye. He placed his hand on the child's head, and said most devoutly, "God grant that I may be accounted worthy of that kingdom."

Thus did the words of a child move the heart of a king. Little children, learn from this that even your words may do both good and harm. A pert word from a child may wound the heart of a mother; a loving one may make it glad. My little children, let your words be kind, true, and right.

guy-merely "rub-a-dub, rub-a-dub," but no tune; and then another big boy would bawl out, "Remember, remember, the fifth of November, gunpowder treason and plot; I know no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot," while the crowd of children around would shout "Hooray! Hooray! No! no! we won't forget it; but we don't want all this noise and nonsense to remember it by, do we, little readers? E.

when they did they made the most of it. To-day their aunt had come over to do a little shopping, and had brought the children with her, leaving them to wander about at their will until her purchases were made. What wonderful sights they had seen, for it was Christmas time. They had peeped in at the windows and seen tapering fir-trees bending down with toys, while rosy-cheeked children danced gaily round them in bright-coloured dresses. Oh, if they were only rich enough to have a tree! And such a lovely one as this, too. They watched eagerly as the little waxen figures and shining balls were fastened on one after another.

"That's the best we've seen, isn't it?" remarked Rebie. "Don't I wish I was going to dance round it!

"We can't see it so well here," said Rebie. "What a disagreeable man. Round the corner, unaware to them, a carriage and pair was driving rapidly. There was a sudden cry from the man on the sidewalk, and the two children were struggling under the wheels.

"Take them to the hospital," cried a bystander, as they were picked up senseless.

The carriage that had done the mischief was quickly borrowed, and the lady to whom it belonged, eager to make up for her coachman's carelessness,

offered to see them there. She waited until she saw their eyes open, and then drove home, promising to send them everything needful.
