Fatber, &c.] Having depre cated all forts of Evil, we come now to Petition for good things in these Prayers, which are introduced, as ufual, with the Lords Prayer, which Jefus commands us to say, whenever we Pray, be the occafion what it will: I am fure in placing it here, we follow the example of both the Latine and Greek Churches, who ufe the Lords Prayer almost in the very beginning of this Office . And in ufing it for the fick, I dare affirm we do apply it as its Author particularly intended; for if we well confider how many of thefe Petitions are proper to a ftate of trouble, we may difcern that our Lord made

them, with refpect to the Tribulations which he forefaw his own Servants were like to endure here. Wherefore we have added the following Paraphrase, to fhew how it refers to the present cafe.

The Paraphrafe of the Lords Prayer.

. 2. We murmur not at thy Corrections, O Lord, but while we labour under them, we cry unto thee [Dur Father which art in Heaven] for fuccour and Tupport: We know thou canft turn them to our good, wherefore however thou dealeft with us, we will still pray that [allowed] and Bleffed may [be thy fame] among all Man-kind: Let these Afflictions bring us to fubmit to thy Kingdom of grace, and then let [tby Kingdom of glory (where all our miseries and forrows fhall cease) [conie] as foon as thou pleasest, Lord if thou ordereft this Sickness fhall prepare us to reign with thee, we have no reason to repine at it, let [tip will] and good pleasure [be done] either for Life or Death concerning us here, [in Earth, as it is] always done concerning those more noble Creatures, the blessed Spirits which are [in Heaben.] But while we remain in this world, we daily need many outward comforts, especially in time of Sickness: [ibe us] therefore [this Dav] while yet there is life and hope, [our daily Bread] with all that is neceffary and convenient for our refreshment under, and recovery out of, this uneafie condition: And that our fins may not keep back thy Bleffing from any good means which is ufed for our relief, [F02gibe us we beseech thee all [our refpeffes] which we here humbly acknowledge and heartily bewail. Charity with all the world. And now that we have fmarted fo feverely for former fins, we cannot but dread the committing of any more; prevent us therefore with thy grace and lead us not inte] any fuch trials as will be too hard for our patience, or holy purposes, that we may not by [Temptation] fall into defpair, or any other fin. Leave us not to our felves, neither deal with us after our Iniquities, but ceither us] good Lord [from] all forts of [b] Temporal, Spiritual, and Eternal. SECTION II.

Of the Refponfals.

WHE

HEN the Prieft hath thus begun to pray, the Church orders all that are present to joyn, not only in heart, but in voice alfo, to befeech God for the fick perfon, who doubtlefs will be much refreshed by the Charity & Devotion of fo many Supplicants, who with united requests, do Petition the Throne of Grace for him; and fince every one of us is liable to fall under the fame neceffities which now opprefs our afflicted Friend, we should all Pray for him with the fame fervency as we with others fhould do for us if we were in the like eftate. The words of these Responsory Prayers are taken out of Davids Pfalms, and have all been explained before, excepting one new Petition for the fick Mans prefervation from Sathans malice, taken out of Pfal. lxxxix. 23. according to the old Latine Tranflation which when we have briefly treated of, we shall by a plain Paraphrase accommodate that and all the reft to the present occafion.
