OMAR KHAYYÁM.-JACKSON (Holbrook). "Edward Fitzgerald and Omar Khayyám: an essay and a bibliography." London: D. Nutt, 1899. Sm. 8vo, pp. 41. 6d. net.

We have in this interesting little booklet striking evidence of the phenomenal growth in popularity of the " Rubáiyát" of the Persian poet. Less than fifty years ago Omar Khayyám was a name, and

nothing more, while to-day it is possible, as Mr. Jackson has done, to describe eight editions of Fitzgerald's translation which first appeared in 1857, published in this country, fourteen editions of the same version issued in America, as well as many editions of the eight other versions enumerated. Many readers will learn for the first time with astonishment "that it is quite impossible to list all the American editions as their name is legion, appearing almost daily at any imaginable price".

BIBLIOGRAPHIES IN PROGRESS.

Much valuable time and energy is often wasted by two or more persons doing the same work in ignorance of each other's labours.

Might we not obviate a good deal of this waste of time and energy by affording in our pages an opportunity for circulating information respecting bibliographies which are in progress, and in so doing render a real service to bibliographers as well as help forward the cause of bibliography?

We repeat here that our ambition is to make the Record a useful medium of communication, and to that end we appeal to readers to assist us by furnishing the necessary particulars of any such work as they may have in hand, with their names and addresses attached.

CHANNEL ISLANDS.-Mr. Albert A. Barkas, Librarian of the Richmond (Surrey) Public Library, requests us to say that for some years he has been collecting material with a view to compiling a bibliography of the Channel Islands.
