THE present Edition of the "Constitutional History of England" has been undertaken for the same reasons and executed on the same plan as are explained in the Preface to the corresponding edition of the "History of the Middle Ages." It has been brought into one volume by leaving out most of the notes at the foot of the pages, and by abbreviating some of the less important remarks; but the great bulk of the book remains unchanged, and nothing of importance has been omitted. The editor has not considered himself at liberty to alter any of the opinions expressed by the Author, even where he differs from them; and it has been his aim to present the work as nearly as possible in the form in which he conceives the author would have wished it to appear if he had himself prepared an edition for the special use of students. It has been thought advisable to print at length the Petition of Right and the Bill of Rights, of which Mr. Hallam gave only an abstract. WM. SMITH. |
