FROM SYCHAR JESUS PROCEEDS TO GALILEE; JOHN BEING NOW CAST INTO PRISON,(1) HE AGAIN VISITS CANA, AND HEALS THERE THE SON

OF A NOBLEMAN, LYING SICK IN CAPERNAUM.

No. 48. John iv. 43-46. Line from Sychar to Cana.
iv. 47-54. At Cana.

JOHN iv. 43-54.

43 Now after two (Taç dvo) days he-departed thence, and went into 44 Galilee. For Jesus himself testified, that a-prophet hath no hon45 our in his-own country. Then when he-was-come into Galilee,(2) the Galileans received him, having-seen all-the-things that he-did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they 46 also went unto the feast. So Jesus came again into Cana of-Galilee, where he-made the water wine. And there-was a-certain nobleman, whose son was-sick at Capernaum.(3)

47 When-he heard that Jesus wascome out-of Judea into Galilee, he-went unto him, and besought him that he-would-come-down, and heal his son: for he-was-atthe-point-of death(nμελεαπovno 48 KELV.) Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye-see signs and wonders,

The noble- 49

ye-will-not believe. man saith unto him, Sir, comedown ere my child die. Jesus 50 saith unto-him, Go-thy-way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus hadspoken unto-him, and he-wenthis-way. And as-he was-now 51 going-down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth. Then enquired-he of them 52 the hour when he-began to-amend. (кoμотερov εσxε.) And they

said unto-him, Yesterday at-theseventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at 53 the same hour, in the-which Jesus said unto-him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house. This is again the- 54 second miracle (onμelov) that Jesus did, when-he-was-come outof Judea into Galilee.

And Jesus returned in the power of-the Spirit into Galilee: and there-went-out a-fame of him through all the region-round-a15 bout. And he taught in their synagogues, being-glorified of all.(1) And he-came to Nazareth,(2) where he-had-been brought-up: and, as his custom was, he-went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood-up for-to-read. 17 And there-was-delivered unto-him the-book of-the prophet Esaias. And when-he-had-opened the book, he-found the place where 18 it-was written, The-Spirit of-theLord is upon me, because he-hathanointed me to-preach-the-gospel to-the-poor; he-hath-sent me toheal the broken-hearted, (σUVTεTpiμμevov v Kapdiav) to-preach deliverance (apɛov) to-the-captives, and recovering-of-sight tothe-blind, to-set at liberty themthat-are-bruised (аTOOTεiλαι Tε19 Opavoμevov ev apeσa)to-preach theacceptable(dekrov)year of-the-Lord.3 20 And he-closed the book, and-hegave-it-again to-the minister, and -sat-down. And they-said, Is not this Joseph's son? he-said unto them, Ye-will-surely (Havrwe) say unto-me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we-have-heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.(4) And he-said, Verily, 24 I-say unto-you, No prophet is accepted (OEKTOC) in his-own country. But I-tell you of a-truth, 25 many widows were in Israel in the days of-Elias, when the heaven was-shut-up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; but 26 unto none of-them was-Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city ofSidon, unto a-woman that was awidow. And many lepers were 27 in Israel in-the-time-of Eliseus the prophet; and none of-them was-cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. And all-they in the syn- 28 agogue, when-they-heard thesethings, were-filled with-wrath, and rose-up, and-thrust him out- 29 of the city, and led him unto the brow of-the hill whereon their city was-built, that they-mightcast him-down-headlong. (KATAкonμvioα.) But he passing through 30 the-midst of-them went-his-way.
