UPON THE APPROACH OF THE FIRST PASSOVEr,(1) Jesus goES UP TO JERUSALEM: HE CASTS THE TRADERS OUT OF THE TEMPLE:(2) AND WHEN THE JEWS DEMAND OF HIM A SIGN, HE FORETELLS THE RESURRECTION OF HIS BODY IN THREE DAYS' TIME.(3)

JOHN ii. 13-42.

And the Jews' passover was athand, and Jesus went-up to Jeru14 lem, and found in the temple those that-sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers-of15 money (Kεpμariorac) sitting: and when-he-had-made a-scourge of small-cords, he- drove them all outof the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured-out the changers' money, (Twv KoλλvßioTWY TO KEрμα) and overthrew the 16 tables; and said unto-them thatsold doves, Take these-things hence; make not my Father's house an-house of-merchandise. 17 And his disciples remembered that it-was written, The zeal ofthine house hath-eaten me-up.

Then answered the Jews and 18 said unto-him, What sign shewestthou unto-us, seeing that thou-doest these-things? Jesus answered 19 and said unto-them, Destroy (Avcare) this temple, and in three days I-will-raise (εyɛow) it-up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six 20 years was-this temple in-building, and wilt-thou rear it-up (εyεpεis) in three days? But he spake of 21 the temple of-his body. When 22 therefore he-was-risen from (nyɛpOn εK) the-dead, his disciples remembered that he-had-said this unto-them; and they-believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had-said.

MIRACLES ARE WROUGHT AT JERUSALEM DURING THE PASSOVER; MANY BELIEVE UPON JESUS:(1) NICODEMUS VISITS HIM BY NIGHT.

Now when he-was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feastday, many believed in his name, when-they-saw (EwOOVYTEC) the 24 miracles which he-did. But Je

1 THERE-was a-man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a-ruler 2 of-the Jews: the-same came to Jesus by-night, and said unto-him, Rabbi, we-know that thou-art-ateacher come from God: for noman can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with 3 him. Jesus answered and said unto-him, Verily, verily, I-say unto-thee, Except a-man be-born again, (yɛvvnoŋ avlev)he-cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a-man be-born when-he-is old? can-he enter the-second-time into his mother's womb, and be-born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, Isay unto-thee, Except a-man beborn of water and of the Spirit, he-cannot enter into the kingdom 6 of-God. That which-is-born (ro γεγεννημενον) of the flesh is fesh; and that which-is-born of the 7 Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I-said unto-thee, Ye must (de) be8 born again. (avwoɛv.) The wind bloweth where it-listeth, (Eλ) and thou-hearest the sound thereof, but canst-not tell whence itcometh, and whither it-goeth: so is every-one that is-born of the 9 Spirit. Nicodemus answered and

said unto-him, How can thesethings be? Jesus answered and 10 said unto-him, Art thou a master of-Israel, and knowest not thesethings? Verily, verily, I-say unto- 11 thee, We-speak that we-do-know, and testify that we-have-seen; and ye-receive not our witness. If I-have-told you earthly-things, 12 (Ta Eπiyɛia) and ye-believe not, how shall-ye-believe, if I-tell you of heavenly-things?(7α επovρavia) And no-man hath-ascended-up to 13 heaven, but he that-came-down from heaven, even the Son of-man which is in heaven.(2) And as 14 Moses lifted-up (wo) the serpent in the wilderness, even-so must the Son of-man be-lifted-up; (vw0nva) that whosoever be- 15 lieveth in him should-not perish, but have eternal life. For God 16 so loved the world, that he-gave his only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him shouldnot perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent (aπesεidev) 17 not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might-be-saved. He that-believeth on him is- 18 not condemned: but he that-believeth not is-condemned already,

because he-hath-not believed in the name of-the only-begotten Son 19 of-God. And this is the condemnation, that light is-come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their 20 deeds were evil. For every one

AFTER THE PASSOVER, JESUS DWELLS IN JUDEA; HIS DISCIPLES BEGIN TO BAPTIZE; JOHN ALSO CONTINUING TO BAPTIZE.

JOHN iii. 22-24.

After these-things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judæa; and there he-tarried (dTOBE) with them, and baptized.(1) 23 And John also was baptizing in

Enon near-to Salim, because there-was much water (vðara Tola) there: and they-came, & were-baptized. For John was 24 not-yet cast into prison.

THE ATTENTION OF THE PHARISEES BEGINNING TO BE DIRECTED TO JESUS AND

HIS DISCIPLES, HE DEPARTS INTO GALILEE;(1) AND ON HIS WAY, PASSES TWO DAYS AT SYCHAR, IN SAMARIA: JOHN NOT BEING YET CAST INTO PRISON.

[blocks in formation]

1 WHEN therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had-heard that Jesus made and baptized more 2 disciples than John, (though Jesus himself baptized not, but 3 his disciples,) he-left Judea, and departed again into Galilee.

4 And he must-needs (ed) go 5 through Samaria. Then comethhe to a-city of Samaria, which-iscalled Sychar, near-to the parcel of-ground that Jacob gave to-his 6 son Joseph.(2) Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, beingwearied (KEKOTIакwg) with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it-was about the-sixth hour.

ditto.

There-cometh a-woman of Sa- 7
maria to-draw water: Jesus saith
unto-her, Give me to-drink. (For 8
his disciples were-gone-away unto
the city to buy meat.) Then saith 9
the woman of-Samaria unto-him,
How is it that thou, being a-Jew,
askest drink of me, which-am a-
woman of-Samaria? for the-Jews
have-no-dealings (σvyxpwvTαI)
with-the-Samaritans. Jesus an- 10
swered and said unto-her, If thou-
knewest the gift of-God, and who
it-is that saith to-thee, Give me
to-drink; thou wouldest-have-
asked-of him, and-he-would-have-
given thee living water.

woman saith unto-him, Sir, thouhast nothing to-draw-with, and the well is deep: from-whence then hast-thou that living water? 12 Art thou greater than-our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and 13 his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto-her, Whosoever drinketh of this water 14 shall-thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall-never (as тov auwva) thirst; but the water that Ishall-give him shall-be in him awell of-water springing-up (ao15 μevov) into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I-thirst not, 16 neither come hither to-draw. Jesus saith unto-her, Go, call thy 17 husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said, I-have no husband. Jesus said unto-her, Thou-hast-well said, I-have no 18 husband. For thou-hast-had five husbands; and he-whom thounow hast is not thy husband: in 19 that saidst-thou truly. The woman saith unto-him, Sir, I-perceive (9ɛwpw) that thou art a-pro20 phet. Our fathers worshipped in

this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where 21 men ought to-worship. Jesus saith unto-her, Woman, believe me, the-hour cometh, when ye-shallneither in this mountain, nor-yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 Ye worship ye-know not what: we-know what we worship: (pooκυνέμεν ὁ οιδαμεν) for salvation 23 (owrnpia) is of the Jews. But thehour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall-worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to24 worship him. God is a-Spirit:

Luke iv. 14, § XVII.

and they that-worship him, must
worship him in spirit and in truth.
The woman saith unto-him, I- 25
know that Messias cometh, which
is called Christ: when he is-come,
he-will-tell (avayyeλe) us all-
things. Jesus saith unto-her, I 26
that speak unto-thee am he.

And upon this came his disci- 27
ples, and marvelled that he-talk-
ed with the-woman: yet no-man
said, What seekest-thou? or, Why
talkest-thou with her? The wo- 28
man then left her water-pot, and
went-her-way into the city, and
saith to-the men, Come, see a- 29
man, which told me all-things
that-ever (ora) I-did: is not this
the Christ? Then they-went out- 30
of the city, and came unto him.

In the mean-while his disciples 31 prayed him, saying, Master, eat. But he said unto-them, I have 32 meat to-eat that ye know not-of. Therefore said the disciples one- 33 to another, Hath-any-man brought him ought to-eat? Jesus saith 34 unto-them, My meat is to do (iva row) the will of-him that-sent me, and to-finish (reλɛtwow) his work. Say not ye(3) There-are 35 yet four-months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I-say unto-you, Lift-up your eyes, and look-on (0ɛaσao0) the fields; for theyare white already to harvest. And 36 he that-reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that both he that-soweth and he that-reapeth may-rejoice together. And herein is that say- 37 ing true, One soweth, (αλλος ὁ σερ) and another reapeth. (alog & Oɛpiwv.) I sent you to- 38 reap that-whereon ye bestowed no-labour: other-men laboured, and ye are-entered into their labours.
