and saith unto-him,

cast thyself down:

for it-is-written, He-shall-give his angelscharge concerning(Ep)thee:

And in their hands theyshall-bear thee-up, lest-at-any-time thou-dash thy foot against a-stone. Jesus said unto-him, it-is-written again, Thou-shalt-not tempt the-Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him-up (παραλαμβανει) into an-exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms ofthe world, (του κόσμου) and the glory of-them;

11

And saith unto-him, all these-things will-I-give thee,

if thou-wilt-falldown and-worship me.

Then saith Jesus
unto-him,

Get-thee-hence, Satan : for it-is-written, Thou-shalt-worship the-Lord thy God, and him only shalt-thou-serve.

Then the devil

leaveth him,

and said unto-him,

If thou-be the-Son of-God,
cast thyself down
from-hence:

10

For it-is-written, He-shall-give his angelscharge over thee, to-keep(rov diapuλağaı)thee: And in their hands they- 11 shall-bear thee-up, lest-at-any-time thou-dash thy foot against a-stone. And Jesus answering said unto-him, It-is-said, Thou-shalt-not

And the devil taking
him-up (αναγαγων) into
an-high mountain,
shewed unto-him all

(στιγμη)

And the devil said unto

him, all this power will-I-give thee, and the glory of-them: for that-is-delivered untome; and to-whomsoever I-will I-give it. If thou therefore wilt-worship me, (πроσκυνησης ενωπιον μου) all shall-be thine. And Jesus answered and-said unto-him, Get-thee behind me, Satan: for it-is-written, Thou-shalt-worship the-Lord thy God, and him only shalt-thou-serve. (λατρεύσεις)

DEPUTIES ARE SENT BY THE COUNCIL OF THE JEWS TO QUESTION JOHN THE BAPTIST; JOHN RENDERS HIS SECOND TESTIMONY TO THE

MESSIAH OR CHRIST.

No.30, opposite Scythopolis.

JOHN i. 19-28.

19 And this is the record (μapropia) of-John, when the Jews sent («7εστελav) priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art 20 thou? And he-confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am 21 not the Christ. And they-asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he-saith, I-am not. Art thou that prophet? And he-answered, 22 No. Then said-they unto-him, Who art-thou? that we-may-give an-answer to-them that-sent us. 23 What sayest-thou of thyself? Hesaid, I am the-voice of-one-crying in the wilderness, Make-straight the way of-the-Lord, as said the

prophet Esaias. And they which- 24 were-sent were of the Pharisees. And they-asked him, and said 25 unto-him, Why baptizest-thou then, if thou be not that (ö) Christ, nor Elias, neither that (6) prophet? John answered them, saying, I 26 baptize with (v) water: but there-standeth one among you, (μεoos iμwv) whom ye know not; he it-is, who coming after me is 27 preferred-before me,(os eupоoαεv μov yeyover) whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. These- 28 things were-done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

PARTICULARS OF TWO DAYS SPENT AT BETHABARA; DURING WHICH JOHN RENDERS A DOUBLE TESTIMONY TO JESUS, AND JESUS CONVERSES WITH CERTAIN OF THE DISCIPLES OF JOHN.

[blocks in formation]

29 The next-day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of-God, which taketh-away (o aipov) the sin of-the 30 world. (koopov.) This is-he of whom I said, After me cometh aman which is preferred-before mе, (εμπроσε μov yeyovεv) for he-was before me. (TOWτоs μov.) 31 And-I knew him not: but that heshould-be-made-manifest to-Israel, therefore am-I come baptiz32 ing with (ev) water. AndJohn barerecord, saying, I-saw (Tε0ɛaμai) the Spirit descending from heaven like a-dove, and it-abode 33 upon him. And-I knew him not: but he that-sent me to-baptize with (E) water, the-same (EKEivos) said unto-me, Upon whom thoushalt-see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the-same is he which-baptizeth with (ev) the 34 -Holy Ghost. And-I saw, and bare-record that this is the Son of God.

and looking-upon Jesus as-he- 36 walked, he-saith, Behold the Lamb of-God!(1) And the two dis- 37 ciples heard him speak, and theyfollowed Jesus. Then Jesus 38 turned, and saw (θεασαμενος) them following, and-saith untothem, What seek-ye? They said unto-him, Rabbi, (which is-to-say, being-interpreted, Master,) where dwellest-thou? He-saith unto- 39 them, Come and see. They-came and saw where he-dwelt, and abode with him that day: for itwas about the-tenth hour.

One of the two which-heard (a- 40
KоVσAVTOV TAρa) John speak, and
followed him, was Andrew, Simon
Peter's brother. He first findeth 41
his-own brother Simon, and saith
unto-him, We-have-found the
Messias, which is, being-inter-
preted, the Christ. And he- 42
brought him to Jesus. And when-
Jesus beheld him, he-said, Thou
art Simon the son of Jona: thou
shalt-be-called Cephas, which is-
by-interpretation, A-stone.(2)

43 The day-following Jesus would go-forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto-him, Follow

me.

44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, 45 the city of-Andrew and Peter. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto-him, We-have-found-him, of-whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did-write, Jesus of 46 Nazareth, the son of-Joseph. And Nathanael said unto-him, Canthere any good-thing come out-of Nazareth? Philip saith unto-him, 47 Come and see. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an-Israelite indeed, (aλnows) in whom is no 48 guile! Nathanael saith unto

AND the third day there-was amarriage in Cana of-Galilee; and the mother of-Jesus was there: 2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. 3 And when-they-wanted wine, the mother of-Jesus saith unto him, 4 They-have no wine. Jesus saith unto-her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? (τι εμοι και σοι) 5 Mine hour is-not-yet come. His mother saith unto-the servants, Whatsoever he-saith unto-you, do 6 it. Jesus answered and said unto-him, Be- 50 cause I-said unto-thee, I-saw thee under the fig-tree, believestthou? thou-shalt-see greaterthings than-these.
