PREFACE WHEN the need arose for a new edition of the writer's "Public Speaking," which had combined his "Essentials of Effective Gesture" and "Essentials of Extempore Speaking," it was deemed advisable to round out the treatment of the subject by incorporating the material of a later volume, "The Effective Speaking Voice." The result is the "Complete Course in Public Speaking." With a view to facilitating complete freedom on the part of teacher or student in utilizing the material, the three phases, voice, gesture, subject matter and construction, have been kept distinct. Part I attempts to embody certain convictions derived from the writer's experience during the past twelve years in teaching oral expression. Perhaps a statement of these convictions will best explain the general character of this section. The first idea is that an effective style of vocal expression is best developed by a large amount of practical application of the fundamental factors of good speech. All study of speech theory which is not specifically and amply applied is largely wasted effort. Another conviction is that such specific and ample application is not possible in connection with an elaborate setting forth of rules and principles, with manifold details, exhaustive analyses, exceptions, and similar complexities. The average student does not, and, it is safe to say, cannot assimilate for practical use the matter in a textbook so constructed. V : ! : |
