MY DEAR, FRIEND, In my last Letter, you had arapid glance at the trading world of Ireland; and I told you a few facts, which you are not to consider as insulated specimens, but as endorsements upon large parcels of each description, to which they refer. Cursory as are my remarks, and hastily as I purposely pass over the disagreeable ground of animadversion, you are not thence to infer, that I do not possess materials for a far weightier case than I feel inclined to array. In truth, volumes might be written without exhausting the contrarieties and incongruities that present themselves at every step, from North to South, from East to West, of this extraordinary theatre. In pursuance of the track which I proposed to myself, I come now to the labouring classes of the people, and feel this quite an affecting subject for the exercise of my pen. Heartless must be that human being, who can look unmoved upon such misery of body, and depravity of mind, as are unhappily become the portion of millions in this ill-fated island: but far gone as is the country in vice and degeneracy, she has yet stamina of constitution to rally, if we may ever hope to see the happy day, in which the efforts of those who can befriend her, shall operate in concert for her good. You have heard too much of the state of the Irish peasantry, from the delegates who were sent over last year to inquire into their distresses, to make it necessary that I should draw elaborate descriptions of want and nakedness, ignorance and filth, appalling as they are incontrovertible.
