The Medal.

A prize of three guineas was offered for the best design of a medal for the Eisteddfod. Of the eight specimens sent in that of Mr. Spiridion, Junior, of Duke Street, Cardiff, was accepted. The medal is 134 inches in diameter. The obverse contains two oval shields, charged with the Royal Arms of England and the Dragon of Wales linked together at the top in bonds of friendship to the Prince of Wales's plume, which droops gracefully over the arms of the united countries. The whole is surrounded by the national emblems, the Welsh leek and the English oak. Around the rim appears "National Eisteddfod of Wales, under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Cardiff, 1883." On the reverse, in bold relief, is an allegorical representation of the three popular muses of Wales-Art, Music, and Poetry-represented by three female figures, classically draped; Art holding a palette and pencil, Music with a harp, and Poetry with a poet's lyre. Over each the Eye of Light sheds its beams, while around the rim are the mottoes of the Eisteddfod, "Yn ngwyneb Haul a Llygad Goleuni" and "Y Gwir yn Erbyn y Byd."
