PREFACE.

[ocr errors]

The Compiler of these few pages has long been deeply impressed with the beauty and comprehensiveness of the Collect for Grace, in our Morning Prayer; and it has appeared to him, that if the mind were accustomed to expand the sentiments which that Collect expresses in so condensed a form, and to follow out the train of thought and feeling which it suggests, it might often be used with peculiar advantage on occasions when the ordinary devotions of the morning were of necessity curtailed. To assist in this effort has been the simple design of the Compiler in the following pages.

COLLECT.

O Lord, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; defend us in the same with Chy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither ran into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by Thy governance, to do always that is righteous in Thy sight: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
