OBITUARY.-Another of our highly respectable merchants has passed away. Mr. John Russell Hurd came to New York about fifty years ago, and after a comparatively short period of mercantile life, retired from active business. Latterly he has been in very feeble health. He had been a director of the branch of the United States Bank in this city, and a president of the Marine Insurance Company. He was also one of the oldest members of the Chamber of Commerce. During the agitation of the tariff and United States Bank questions, Mr. Hurd was a contributor to the city journals upon these subjects. He was an extensive traveler, a good classical scholar, and wrote considerably upon theological subjects. As a trustee in the public schools and a Sunday school visitor, he was warmly interested in the duties devolving on him. In a recent number of the New York Observer, he is referred to as one of the early and zealous laborers in the cause of Presbyterian Church extension. A conscientious and upright Christian merchant of the old school, he leaves behind him a good memory.
