GENERAL HUGH L. SCOTT
General Scott, the new Chief of Staff of the U. S. Army, succeeding General
Wotherspoon in that position, was born in 1853 in Kentucky; graduated
from West Point in 1876; served in many Indian campaigns; was Adju-
tant-General of Cuba, 1898-1903; Governor of the Sulu Archipelago,
1903-6, in which capacity he abolished slavery and the slave trade; Su-
perintendent and Commandant U. S. Military Academy, 1906-10

CAPTAIN BENTON C. DECKER, OF THE U.S. S. TENNESSEE

When news came that shots from the Turkish forces on the shore at Smyrna were fired
at, or across the bows of, a launch from the American cruiser Tennessee, there was
uncertainty in this country as to what it meant: but Americans have learned
to put their trust in the courage, sense of honor, and discretion of American
naval officers, and they awaited with confidence further word from Cap-
tain Decker. Editorial comment on this incident appears in this issue

Connected with Plymouth Church by the arcade shown at the right of the picture, the new educational buildings form a very pleasing architectural group; the large structure at the left is the club-house; the roof of the gymnasium is seen just over the arcade; farther on the building devoted to class rooms will be erected. The statue of Mr. Beecher, by Gutzon Borglum, is placed near the center of the arcade. See editorial comment
