Eugénie, the widow of Napoleon III, has lived in England since the downfall of the Emperor in 1870. At the advanced age of 88, she is actively helping on the cause of the Allies. She has devoted her fine home at Farnborough Hill to the purposes of a military hospital. In the photograph she appears near the center of the group, dressed in black

Not since John Paul Jones, commanding first the "Ranger" and then the" Bon Homme Richard," carried havoc to the shores of England itself, has any one vessel so menaced British shipping. The Emden has sunk or taken 21 British vessels, 7 in one week. It is pleasing to hear from one shipping authority, however, that her "work of destruction was accompanied with strict consideration for the rights of innocent parties," and that "when liners carrying women and children have fallen in with German cruisers, the liners have been allowed to proceed unmolested after dismantling their wireless." The Emden is a 241⁄2-knot light cruiser of 3,540 tons, with a complement of 361 men, and mounts ten 4.1 quick-firing guns
