Lo! the day's champion, the golden sun,
His measured course of cloudless blue hath run;
The sea-gull screaming, seeks her cliff-built nest,
The moon lifts o'er the deep her silver crest.
Our lovely bark, with kisses soft and light,
Must fly from wave to wave, and bid good night.

[blocks in formation]

A maiden stood on a terrace old,

And she looked across the sea,

And her eyes were dim with a mist of tears,
And her heart beat heavily....

"For it's oh! but to hear his voice,

And to know that he was near;"

And the sea rose up with an angry wail,
And the moon shone cold and clear.

A knight lay on a battle-field

When the fight was lost and won,

And the red and gold of the banner stream'd,
In the light of the dying sun;

"For it's oh! but to hear her voice,

And to know that she was near;

While his life ebb'd out like the sinking sea,

With no one by to hear.

The knight lay dead in the morning light,

When the day awoke,

And the maid knelt near on the dewy grass,

And the words she spoke were,

"It's oh! but to hear his voice,

But to hear him speak again;"

Garrett

But the sun went down and the weeping maid
Lay dead among the slain.

Chorus "O who will o'er the downs." .. Pearsall

[ocr errors]

THE CHOIR.

O who will o'er the downs so free,

O who will with me ride,

O who will up and follow me,

To win a blooming bride?
Her father he has locked the door,
Her mother keeps the key;
But neither door nor bolt shall part
My own true love from me!

I saw her bow'r at twilight grey,
'Twas guarded safe and sure,
I saw her bow'r at break of day,
'Twas guarded then no more!
The varlets they were all asleep,

And none was there to see
The greeting fair that passed there
Between my love and me!

I promis'd her to come at night,
With comrades brave and true,
A gallant band with sword in hand
To break her prison through:
I promis'd her to come at night,
She's waiting now for me,

And e're the dawn of morning light,
I'll set my true love free!

Cradle Song...."Dream, baby, dream.".... Hatton

W. F. ROGERS.

Dream, baby, dream!......

The stars are glowing,
Hear'st thou the stream?

'Tis softly flowing.
All gently glide the hours:

Above no tempest low'rs:
Below are fragrant flow'rs
In silence growing.
Sleep, baby, sleep! . . . . . .

Till dawn to-morrow!
Why should'st thou weep,

Who know'st not sorrow?

Too soon come pains and fears;
Too soon a cause for tears;

So from thy future years

No sadness borrow!

Dream, baby, dream!....
Thine eyelids quiver,
Know'st thou the theme
Of yon soft river?

It saith "be calm, be sure,

Unfailing, gentle, pure;
So shall thy life endure,
Like mine for ever!"

Four-Part Song.." Shepherds all, and maidens fair." W. Macfarren

THE CHOIR.

Shepherds all, and maidens fair,
Fold your flocks up, for the air
'Gins to thicken, and the sun
Already his great course hath run.
See the dewdrops how they kiss
Every little flow'r that is
Hanging on their velvet heads
Like a rope of crystal beads.
Shepherds all, &c.

And let your dogs lie loose about,
Lest the wolf come as a scout,

From the mount, and e're day
Bear a lamb or kid away;
Or the crafty thievish fox
Break upon your simple flocks.
Shepherds all, &c.

Four-Part Song.."The happiest land."

[blocks in formation]

SUNG BY FORMER MEMBERS OF THE CHOIR.

There sat one day in quiet,

By an alehouse on the Rhine,

Four hale and hearty fallows,
And drank the precious wine.

The landlord's daughter filled their cup,
Around the rustic board;

Then sat they all so calm and still,

And spake not one rude word.

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

"Ha!" cried a Saxon laughing,

And dashed his beard with wine,

"I had rather live in Lapland

Than that Swabian land of thine!

The goodliest land on all this earth,
It is the Saxon land:

There have I as many maidens,

As fingers on this hand."

"Hold your tongues, both Swabian and Saxon."
