VER. 7. To young Bathyllus, lovely Boy.] Bathyllus was a young Samian of extreme Beauty Belov'd, by Polycrates and Anacreon, whofe Paffion for him is taken notice of by Horace in his 14th Epod.

Anacreonta Teium:

Qui perfæpe cava teftudine flevit amorem,
Non elaboratum ad pedem.

Thus foft Anacreon for Bathyllus burn'd,

VER. 12. Gave Me, a little Hymn's Reward.] Madam D'Acier obferves, that Anacreon could not point out the Value of his Performances in a more beautiful manner, than by faying, That Venus made no Difficulty of parting with one of her favourite Doves, for only a little Hymn of his compofing. This Paffage is a fufficient Confutation of thofe who imagine, that our Poet was the Author of nothing but Odes.

Or fp with him the Nellar'd Bowl.] The Dove extols the Bounty of his Mafter, for admitting him to drink of the fame Wine as himself; because it was an Indulgence never allowed by the Ancients, to any but their favourite Servants. Homer makes it a Mark of Diftinction, which Achilles pays to Ajax, Ulyfes, and Phanix. II. ί. Ver. 202.
