Agelades. He flourish'd, according to Pliny, in the 87th Olympiad; therefore if we allow Pliny's Calculation, this Epigram and the subsequent one must belong to fome other Author than Anacreon, tho' they are both of them attributed to him by the Anthologia. Myron was the most celebrated Artift of his Time. Petronius fpeaking of him fays, Penè hominum animas ferarumque are comprehenderat. "He had almoft found the

Art to enclofe the Souls of Men and Beasts in Brass.

* Amongst the many beautiful Epigrams which have been compos'd upon this Cow of Myron's, the following from Aufonius deferves particular Commendation.

Bucula fum cælo genitoris facta Myronis
Erea; nec factam me puto, fed genitam.
Sic me Taurus init; fic proxima bucula mugit,

Sic vitula fitiens ubera noftra petit.

THIS beauteous Cow which wond'ring you behold,

Was harden'd into Brass by Age;

Not form'd by Myron's animating Mold,

Who falfely would our Praise engage.

EPIGR.

Miraris quod fallo gregem? gregis ipfe Magifter
Inter pafcentes me numerare folet.

Tho' Myron boast my fair Creation's Fame,
From genial Nature, not from Art I came.
The am'rous Bull's Afcent this Truth avows;
Approaching me the confcious Heifer lows;
The eager Calf my strutting Dug believes.
Nor wonder thus my Form the Herd deceives!
The Mafter's Self can no Distinction find,
But numbers me amongst the milky Kind.

Propertius tells us that there were four of thefe Cows made by Myron.

Atque aram circum fteterant armenta Myronis,
Quatuor artificis vivida figna boves.

EPIGR..

Thofe Epigrams which follow were collected by Barnes, and first added to his Edition of our Poet; the firft Five upon the Authority of a Manufcript Anthologia at Paris, and the rest upon the Credit of a Heidelberg Manufcript. Some of them are probably Anacreon's, and fome not.

* Paufanias, Eliac. L. 2. c. 13. mentions this Mare of Phidola's, and tells us, that fhe won the Race herself, after her Driver was thrown. He fixes this Victory to have happen'd in the 68th Olympiad, according to which Account this Distich might very well be wrote by our Author.
