2 COR. VIII. 9-19.

a For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, b that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

a See on John i. ver. 14. clause 4.

b See on John x. ver. 30.

e If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? Luke xvi. 11. I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see, Rev. iii. 18.

VER. 10.

a

And herein 1 give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be * forward a year ago.

• Or, willing.

For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal hath provoked very many, 2 Cor. ix. 2.

|

VER. 11.

Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have.

VER. 12.

For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath

not.

VER. 13.

A. D. 60.

For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened :

VER. 14.

But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:

VER. 15.

a As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack.

a And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack they gathered every man according to his eating, Exod. xvi. 18.

VER. 16.

But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you.

VER. 17.

a For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you.

CHAP. IX.-VER. 1.

Περὶ μὲν γὰρ τῆς διακονίας τῆς εἰς τοὺς ἁγίους περισσὸν μοί ἐστι τὸ γράφειν ὑμῖν· For as touching the ministering to the saints, it is superfluous for me to write

to you:

VER. 2.

For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Aahaia was ready a year ago ; and your seul hath provoked very many.

VER. 3.

And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind:

* Or, gift.

VER. 20.

Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance, which is administered by us:

VER. 21.

3 Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

Yet have I sent the brethren, lest our

3 See on Rom. xii. ver. 17. clause 2. boasting of you should be in vain in this behalf; that, as I said, ye may be ready.

VER. 22.

And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence

which I have in you.

VER. 23.

Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.

VER. 24.

Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf.

VER. 4.

Lest haply if they of Macedonia come with me, and find you unprepared, we (that we say not, ye) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting.

VER. 5.

Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness.

* Gr. blessing.

+ Or, which hath been so much spoken of before.
