Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God; so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear, Heb. xi. 3.

VER. 5.

Λανθάνει γὰρ αὐτοὺς τοῦτο θέλοντας, ὅτι οὐρανοὶ ἦσαν ἔκπαλαι, καὶ γῆ ἐξ ὕδα· τος καὶ δι ̓ ὕδατος συνεστώσα, τῷ τοῦ Θεοῦ λόγῳ

For this they willingly are ignorant' of, a that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth * standing out of the water and in the water :

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, a that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

Οὐ βραδύνει ὁ Κύριος τῆς ἐπαγγελίας ὥς τινες βραδυτῆτα ἡγοῦνται· ἀλλὰ μακροθυμεῖ εἰς ἡμᾶς, μὴ βουλόμενός τινας ἀπολέσθαι, ἀλλὰ πάντας εἰς μετάνοιαν χωρῆσαι.

a The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; bbut is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

But the day of the Lord will come b as a thief in the night; c in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren: he that loveth not his brother abideth in death, 1 John iii. 14. We know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us, 24. And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness, v. 19. He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true, John iii. 33. See also on Rom. viii. ver. 16.
