P.P. RACES.-The Committees of Tattersall's and the Rooms at Newmarket met on Monday, February 18th, and unanimously agreed to the following regulations :-" As much uncertainty prevails on the subject of play or pay races, we, the Committees of Tattersall's and of the Newmarket Rooms, think it desirable to propose the following rule, viz.: :- "That the following races only shall be considered p.p.:-The Derby and Oaks at Epsom; the St. Leger at Doncaster; the Two Thousand Guineas; the One Thousand Guineas; the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire at Newmarket; the Ascot, Goodwood, and Doncaster Cups; and all handicaps above £200 value, with a double forfeit, the minor of which shall not be less than £5. "Secondly, The Committees will take no cognizance of any disputes respecting p.p. bets on any other races.'

We regret to have to record the death of Frank Butler, the jockey, at Newmarket, on Friday, the first of February, after a very long illness. He was in the thirty-eighth year of his age. A portrait of Butler, accompanied with a full memoir, for he never rode afterwards, appeared in the Magazine for February, 1854.

We have also to notice the decease of Mr. Charles Thellusson, in his sixtieth year. He was the breeder of Rataplan, King Tom, and other well-known horses.

With two very determined attempts to "get at" favourites, the Derby betting of the month has rather more than the usual amount of interest about it. Still the effect of these nobbling schemes is not very apparent. Neither Ellington nor Fly-by-Night has suffered much, the feeling against the latter being more attributable to a report of lameness from an accident, than to any fear that he will yet meet the fate of Aurifer. By odds, however, the steadiest favourite of the month has been the present crack, Wentworth. Indeed, both John Day's horses have at present a very blooming look. The demand for Artillery, with the prospect of peace before us, appears to have subsided; while Vandermeulin threatens to come sooner or later with some force.

Still the centre of all attraction is Yellow Jack, whose friends talk of winning the Two Thousand, the Chester Cup, and Derby with him—all or any as they please. Perhaps the antecedents of no horse ever promised less for anything of the sort. The money, however, comes in freely; the stand against him being most determined in the Derby. For the other two events it will be seen he is first favourite. Yorkshire Grey, Mishap, and Fatalist now come next in repute for the Chester Cup, Epaminondas's price having been for weeks a dead letter.

THE OMNIBUS.

"There he sat, as I thought expounding the law and the prophets, until on drawing a little nearer, I found he was only expatiating on the merits of a brown horse." BRACEBRIDGE HALL.

After a winter, which has been a great one for coursers, middling for hunting men, and disheartening to steeple-chasers (whose handicappers seem bent upon sinking the sport lower and lower by their feather-scale weights) it is delightful to find ourselves on the threshold of what bids fair to be a capital racing season. The inveterate opponents of P.P. betting have just put forward their opinions again with the crocusses; and seeing that the wind has been so completely taken out of their sails by Admiral Rous (or "The Sailor," as all Newmarket term him), and the Committees of the Rooms at Tattersall's and Newmarket, we can say more for their spirit than their judgment. With the limitations which have been so recently agreed on they ought to rest satisfied, more especially as the P.P. conditions which were universally attached at Tattersall's to the Earl Spencer's Plate operations might have shown them that their attempts to bind the Ring are utterly futile. We thought that the magnificent disdain which Catterick displayed for the Newmarket selling rule was not likely to pass unnoticed by "The Upper House," and their uncompromising recommendation is not calculated to improve the feeling which exists between them and "The Commons." But we must pass on to the meetings of the month.

Nottingham was a dull affair, and only helped off by the never-say-die struggle which The Dupe, by Flatcatcher, who has retired in favour of Hermit at Oswaldkirk, made with Cutty Quean; the Womersley colt, a 100 gs. purchase at Sir Tatton's last sale, being beaten off two lengths. Sir Rowland Trenchard, the only runner left of the 18 St. Legerites of 1851, tried his luck three times, and got a verdict from Mr. Johnson at last. This aged negro then opened the Warwick Meeting, where the surplusses reached £205, with "a head" win; and Stork had to succumb to Mr. T. Parr's Fisherman. Fulbeck, with his Nottingham laurels fresh on him, had them twice tarnished-first by Rodo-meli, or rather by Captain Little, and then by Little Davie, who has had a still greater monopoly of the Great Warwickshire Handicap than even Vampyre had of the Ascot Stakes. Apathy, by Annandale, who was left at the post at Lincoln, and bought for 100 gs. at Doncaster last year, won his price and £60 over at the first time of asking, but owed his victory over Lambourne entirely to his superior fitness. Again was Tom a stumbling-block in his brother Edwin's way; and the 56 Madame Clicquot, by Burgundy, could not keep up the cracker" at which she went off for the seven furlongs.
