The Geography of Names

Most Rhode Island Greenings Grown in New York

From Chicago Post

The interest of the American people in that fine fruit the apple is shown by the sagacity of the news editor of the Christian Science Monitor, who gives a place on the first page to a story telling of the apples which lead all others in production and popularity. The last sentence of the Monitor's presentation of apple facts is this: "Most Rhode Island Greenings are grown in New York."

Now, of course, a Rhode Island Greening is a specific breed, or rather species, of apple which probably originated in Rhode Island and thereby received its name. So it may be honest and upright to call a New York Greening a Rhode Island Greening, but we hold that in all conscience a like procedure is not justifiable in regard to all the products of the farm. The pure-food law forbids, as we understand it, the misbranding of products, and so while Rhode Island Greenings, because of the native heath of the species, may be grown without legai penalty in New York, we do not think that there is high justification for making a blanket of privilege out of the law.

For instance, the pigeon lofts of every state in this blessed Union produce nothing but Philadelphia squabs. For proof of the fact consult any bill of fare or any local trade list anywhere in the land. Moreover, any young goose hatched and reared to the tender eating stage on the bank of and in any pool in the whole United States is a Rhode Island green goose and nothing else. Vermont turkeys are raised on many an Illinois farm and on farms in all of Illinois' sister states which have climate and feeding grounds fit for the bird. The list might be extended to cover more ground than the extended wings of any mother goose or turkey.

Nowadays Herkimer County cheese has to come from Herkimer County, New York, or the federal law enforcers will get busy. California peaches must be grown in California, and Michigan and Maryland must mother their own market crops, but the duck, the goose, the turkey and the pigeon can come from anywhere they want to and call themselves citizen residents of any state they choose. The guinea hen is the worst offender in this respect, but then, perhaps, nobody can be deceived into believing that a guinea hen really comes from Guinea.

If you see a tall fellow ahead of a crowd,

A leader of men, marching fearless and proud,
And you know of a tale whose mere telling aloud
Would cause his proud head to in anguish be bowed,
It's a pretty good plan to forget it.

Watching His Money Grow

New York Times

When the friend entered the bond broker's office he found him handling a fair-sized wad of bonds. Without preliminaries, the broker said: "Do you know, Bill, that some of the real ignoramuses say that 'money grows in Wall Street.' I disagree entirely with them. It is marketed down here only. Now, look at this tidy little sheaf of first-class bonds, amounting to $10,000 in value. I am sending them to a farmer far upstate, and they represent his surplus earnings for 1913. About this time every year, for the past fifteen years, I have sent him a similar wad of bonds. The old chap will not visit New York, but makes his home in Rochester, N. Y., during the winter. In the summer and early autumn he watches his money grow in his apple orchards. He does no work of importance, and spends most of the time in between meals and sleeping hours walking in his orchards and smoking on the front stoop.

"He owns ninety-five magnificent acres of Baldwin apple trees, and hires a few men to keep the trees sprayed and the orchard trim. Along around Sept. 1, the representative of a certain New York firm visits him and spends a couple of weeks on his farm. Just before leaving the representative says: 'Mr. -, your apples are worth $15,000 this year,' and Mr. there and then gets his check for that amount. The purchaser has to pick the apples off the trees, and the old gentleman makes him pay for the meals his men consume, and is careful to see that they don't damage his property. If that is not watching your money grow, I don't know what is."

The friend looked wistfully at the bonds, and both he and the broker heaved a big sigh.

Apples

I sing to thee, O Apple,
A paean that will suit
The fitness of thy praises,
Thou most historic fruit.
Thy roots in Eden's Garden

Once gave thee to the world;
But, ah, thy first taste fatal

Man from that Eden hurled.

But still he took thee with him,
And thou didst make amend,

For of joys gastronomic

Thou are the means and end;
There's cider, apple toddy,
To fill the social glass,
And apple pie that't toothsome,
And, oh, that apple sass!

MIGHT BE EMBARRASSING

A young girl was taking a trip on one of the Great Lakes in The lake was quite rough and many were seasick. The girl sat in the bow and was unusually quiet for her, so her father thought. He watched her a few moments in silence, then asked:

"Are you feeling sick, Marion?"

"Well, not exactly sick, but I should hate to yawn," she replied.

SPECIAL NOTES

MCKELLAR COLD STORAGE BILLS-Advices from Washington state that these bills failed to receive consideration in the House and expired with the adjournment on March 4th. The Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce decided not to print the hearings which were held upon these measures. Requiescat in pace. Pax vobiscum. May the sleep of peace attach to all attacks upon legitimate industry.

GRADE LEGISLATION-BETTER PACKING-In the near future we expect to be able to make some valuable announcements along this line. Greater progress has been made in the last two years than ever before. The old methods leading to distrust and fraud must give way. The battle is not only being fought but is being won. New York will stand pat and others are falling into

line.
