An Act passed by the last Legislature providing the manner of computing the enrolled militia of the State has proved a saving to State and counties of about $2,000 per year.

The enrolled militia of the State consists at present of sixteen thousand five hundred and thirty (16,530) men, divided among the

counties as follows:

[blocks in formation]

In addition to the amount paid by the State to the various counties for rent of armories for companies in said counties, the following amounts have been paid out of the appropriation made by the last Legislature for such purpose:

[blocks in formation]

Nov. 7... Expenses collecting arms (W. J. Plum)....

75 00

Dec. 1... Boxing arms

6 00

Total.......

$362 44

With the coöperation of the Capitol Commissioners a room in the basement of the Capitol building has, at a cost of about $100, been put in a condition to serve the present wants of the State as an armory. This will prove a saving to the State of about $200 per year, the amount paid by my predecessor for rent of storage for State arms and ammunition.

In response to a call from the civil authorities of Eureka County, August 11, 1879, asking for the aid of the militia to execute the law, an order was issued by Your Excellency commanding Brigadier-General George M. Sabin to take such steps as he might deem necessary. I am happy to say, however, that the civil authorities were sufficient to execute the law. That although some portion of the Brigade were placed under orders, their services were not found necessary. For a more detailed account I refer you to report of Brigadier-General Sabin hereto annexed.

I have the honor to be,

Very respectfully, your obedient servant,

J. W. ADAMS,

Adjutant-General.
