dried take a polish equal almost to that of stone, and are much employed for the making of sleeve-buttons and the like. They use their vertebrææ, or backbone, for canes, an iron or steel rod being run down the centre, and the side openings being filled with mother-of-pearl. In China sharkfins form an article of food. The teeth are in demand in the Pacific Isles, where they are made into swords, daggers, spear-heads, and many other weapons. Their edges are jagged like a saw, and inflict fearful wounds. Curious Willow trees. On the Pribylov Islands, already referred to, is found a curious willow-tree, called the "talnuk," of which there are three species. One grows exactly as a cucumber vine. As soon as it has sprouted six inches or so upwards from the soil, it then droops over, and creeps prostrate along the earth and rocks. Some of the largest talnuk trunks measure eight or ten feet in length upon the ground, being as large round the stump as the waist of a man. The general size, however, but it supplies all that is needed in a tropical country in the way of nest, the birds being removed to the bamboo-thatched huts of the natives whenever there is necessity for their being kept under shelter. These roosts are usually erected by the side of the roadway, and being met with at frequent intervals, they form an attractive feature in the landscape. Indeed, nothing more suggestive of the dreamy life led by the inhabitants of tropical countries could be conceived than is much smaller; while the two other species scarcely ever attain the diameter of a pencil or the length of two feet. A Pigeon-roost in Buga. As will be seen from the engraving, the pigeonperches common in Buga, in South America, are very different from the lofts and cots generally used in this country. They are odd-looking structures, but serve their purpose well enough. The material of which they are built is bamboo, and the roost consists of two strong upright poles set up a short distance apart, and joined together at the top by a thinner pole, across which are suspended a couple of V-shaped frames. This completes the perch; a peep at Buga under the blaze of the noonday sun. The natives are either indoors or else enjoying a siesta under the verandah of their humble dwellings; all around are heard strange noises unknown in colder climes, and birds of brilliant plumage flit here and there, while a delicious perfume of fruit and flowers and the winning "coo" of our pigeon friends fill the air. Hanoverian These medals, as I dare say many readers are aware, are sold by toydealers for use as counters in certain parlour games. They bear on one side the image of the Queen, with the words "Victoria Regina," and on the other an equestrian figure, and the inscription, "To Hanover," with the date, 1837-hence their popular name. The DeputyMaster of the Mint, in a recent report, urges that the manufacture and sale of these medals should be prohibited by Act of Parliament, in consequence of their giving rise to a considerable amount of crime. For though their resemblance to sovereigns is very slight, and their weight is much lighter, no fewer than thirty prosecutions of adults and children took place last year in the United Kingdom for the offence of "uttering"-that is, for trying to pass -these Hanoverian medals as sovereigns. The sooner such an Act is in force the better. "What is your name?" said Ethel, bending down; but the tiny girl only put her finger in her mouth, and her sister answered "She's named Mary, but we call her Polly, miss." "Then here's another Polly!" said Ethel, laughing, and she showed them the parrot, who looked very old and very grave as the children watched it holding a dainty bit in its claws. "He isn't greedy, like the dog, miss," said Polly's sister, smiling. "No; Rover has been a naughty boy to-day; and here he comes, so I shall make him beg Polly's pardon!" said Ethel. Rover slowly pushed open the door, and as he knew he had done wrong, his tail hung down very sadly. He looked at the little girl he had robbed, and then crept to Ethel's feet. "Bad boy! for shame to steal little girls' cakes!" cried Ethel. Rover crawled a little closer, and looked up i wistfully. "You are sorry? very well then, sit up and beg her pardon!" Polly's laugh was very merry when Rover sat up before her, and waved his paw up and down to make her shake hands! When they laughed, Rover saw the worst was over, and he galloped round the room, giving short barks of great delight. "Bad dog! Noisy dog!" croaked the parrot, looking solemnly down on the children.
