ANIMALS” (p. 247). OT far distant from the village of A-, in a western county, a large farmhouse stands, surrounded by cornfields and pasture-lands. These lands and house belong to Farmer Burton. He lives in the house with his wife and children. He is a kind man, and never ill-treats the animals on his farm. He has now plenty to do, for his corn is ripening fast. He must engage some labourers to help in the work. So telling his wife that he must go to town to hire some labourers he set off in his cart. When he got to Bampton he went to the market-place, where the men who were wanting work stood. He had soon engaged half a dozen, and thought of returning homewards, when he was attracted by a crowd. Going nearer he perceived that in the midst of the crowd stood a horse, which was rearing and kicking violently, to the great danger of the people who stood around. Farmer Burton inquired of a gentleman who stood near what was the matter. The gentleman replied, "The owner of this horse wishes to sell him, but no one will buy him, he is such a vicious animal." On hearing this the farmer, who was in want of a horse, went up to the owner and asked the price. It was not much. So Farmer Burton bought it. He then led the horse away, rearing and kicking. Tying him to the back of his cart, he proceeded towards home. The farmer intended to train the horse, and to see what effect his kindness would have on the animal, which had evidently been very ill-treated. When he arrived at the farmhouse the horse was put in the stables and fed. The next day the farmer went to the stables with his wife and children. The children wished to see the horse, for they must decide by what name to call him. At last they agreed to call him "Star," for he had a white spot on his forehead. The farmer then fed the horse from his own hands, calling him pet names, At first the horse would not come near to him, but seeing that his new master had not a whip in his hand he soon came nearer. After he had been at Farmer Burton's a week the effect of good treatment and kind words had altered him considerably. He was now a sleek and well-kept animal, all viciousness and bad temper having vanished. He knew the voices of the farmer's children, and would come to them to be fed. A month after, the gentleman who had sold him to Farmer 12, Queen's Square, Battersea Park, (Aged 14.) LIST OF HONOUR. WAS a wild, secluded valley, in a mountain range so wide; Three peasant children wended slowly up the mountain side: A tall and graceful girl of twelve, a merry lad of ten, A basket full of food was hung on dark-eyed Bertha's arm, warm. These three together slowly climbed the craggy mountain road; Ben, with Pertha, walked belind, while Fritz before them strode. Higher and higher up they climbed till they reached a shady grove, And there they found the creature which had caused them A little mountain goat, which they had tethered to a tree; free. This little goat, not long ago, a happy kid had been, stream; But the hunter marked that mother, and one day, soon after dawn, From her trembling little kid, dead and bleeding, she was borne. These three, in wandering up the heights, the orphan kid had found, And brought her to the grove, and laid her on the grassy Then tenderly they nursed her, and fed her day by day; They tied a bell around her throat, and gave her milk and And tenderly embraced her, and stroked her dainty head.
