The City of Bristol has been extended since 1891 by the following additions:-Parts of the Civil Parishes of Shirehampton and Easton in Gordano by the Bristol Corporation Act. 1895; the Urban Districts of Stapleton and St. George, and parts of the Civil Parishes of Horfield, Bri-lington, Bedminster, Long Ashton, Easton in Gordano, Portbury, and Portishead, by the Bristol Corporation Act, 1897; and parts of the Civil Parishes of Henbury and Shirehampton, by the Bristol Corporation (Docks and Railways) Act, 1901. The entire area within Bristol County Borough was formed into the single Parish of Bristol by Local Government Board Order, No. 38,597, which came into operation on 1st October, 1898, and the additions to the Borough subsequently to that date were also made to the Parish. By Local Government Board Order, No. P. 892, which was confirmed by Local Government Board Provisional Orders Confirmation Act, 1893, and came into operation on 9th November, 1893, the Municipal Borough of Cheltenham was extended to include parts of the Urban Districts of Charlton Kings and Leckhampton, the Parishes therein being added to Cheltenham Civil Parish in 1894. By Local Government Board Order, No. 32,250, which came into operation on the “appointed day," 1894, the Rural part of the Civil Parish of Cirencester was added to the Urban District of Cirencester. By the Gloucester Corporation Act, 1894. which came into operation on 26th March, 1896, the City and Parish of Gloucester were extended to include the Civil Parish of St. Nicholas Without; and by Local Government Board Order, No. P.1,619, which was confirmed by Local Government Board Provisional Orders Confirmation (No. 14) Act, 1900, and came into operation on 9th November, 1900, the City and Parish were further extended to include parts of the Civil Parishes of Barnwood, Hempstead, Matson, Upton St. Leonards, and Tuffley. d By Local Government Board Order, No. 31,998, which came into operation on the appointed day," 1894, the Rural part of the Civil Parish of Horfield was added to the Urban District of Horfield. By the Bristol Corporation Act, 1897, which came into operation on 31st October, 1897, part of the Urban District of Horfield was transferred to the City of Bristol." By the Bristol Corporation Act, 1897, which came into operation on 31st October, 1897, the Urban Districts of St. George and Stapleton were dissolved, their constituent Parishes being added to the City of Bristol. d By Local Government Board Order, No. 31,999, which came into operation on the "appointed day," 1894, part of the Urban District of Westbury on Severn was transferred to the Rural District of Westbury on Severn. By Local Government Board Order, No. 35,366, which came into operation on 1st April, 1897, the part of the former Civil Parish of Westbury on Severn, within the Rural District of Westbury on Severn, was transferred to the Civil Parish and Urban District of Westbury on Severn. NOTE.-Bristol (320) is the only Registration District in the County of Gloucester which contains no Rural area; while the Poor Law Unions and Registration Districts of Chipping Sodbury (322), Thornbury (323), Dursley (324), Wheatenhurst (328), Northleach (332), and Winchcomb (334), contain no Urban District. Under the provisions of the Local Government Act, 1894, considerable changes were made in the constitution of Rural Districts. In Gloucestershire they comprise exclusively Parishes in the Poor Law Unions of the same names, except Campden, East Dean with United Parishes, Lydney, Marston Sicca, Pebworth, Warmley, and West Dean, which consist of Parishes in the Poor Law Unions of Shipston on Stour, Westbury on Severn, Chepstow, Stratford on Avon, Evesham, Keynsham, and Monmouth respectively. The extent of each Rural District may readily be seen in the Map preceding the Tables. By the Bristol Corporation (Docks and Railways, etc.) Act, 1901, part of Barton Regis Rural District was added to the City and County Borough of Bristol. The Registration Districts of the County of Gloucester are all co-extensive with the Poor Law Unions or Parishes of the same names. |
