PREFACE.

THE restorations which were in progress when

the Handbook for the Western Cathedrals was

published in 1865, have since that year been so greatly extended, that in the present Edition it has been found necessary to add an Appendix to each Cathedral, recording the changes which have taken place between 1865 and 1874.

The most important of these is the addition of a nave to Bristol Cathedral. Mr. G. E. Street, R.A., under whom that work is in progress, has kindly furnished a ground-plan of the Cathedral, with the nave. The former ground-plan is also given, so as to allow of a comparison between the periods.

Acknowledgment of assistance is again due to

W. O.

b

Mr. Waller at Gloucester.

The Rev. F. T.

Havergal, Sub-Treasurer and Minor Canon of Hereford, and the Rev. R. Cattley, Minor Canon of Worcester, have also supplied much valuable information.

RICHARD JOHN KING.
